I’m still working on the Too Faced Sweet Peach and Zoeva Rose Golden Eyeshadow Palette post, you’ll see those words hyperlinked once it’s up. 🙂 In the meantime, I wanted to give a quick shout-out to two new things in the beauty and lifestyle subscription space, the April 2016 Ipsy Glam Bag (check out my review of the March 2016 Ipsy Glam Bag here) and a supercool “monthly entertainment concierge box” called Around The Blox—very exciting! 🙂
So first, Ipsy April. TBH, I wasn’t so keen about the other products in the kit, hence why you’re only seeing three items pictured—which are fantastic, along with a Tarte LipSurgence™ Lip Crème that I just didn’t get to photograph.
I won’t mention the other samples in this month’s glam bag, but let me just say that the sub-par nature of those solidified my belief that for some brands, participating in a sampling service such as Ipsy, Birchbox, and the like, is more of an after-thought rather than an important, strategic way to reach potential customers. One of the samples was a blush and contour powder the size of, say, an eyeshadow you would find in a kid’s Barbie makeup kit, if there ever was such a thing. There was a small tube of face serum that was filled a third of the way through. Yes, one could see through the opaque tube.
To me if you’re a brand deciding on whether or not to participate in Ipsy et. al. (store samples are a different story), where the bar is set quite high, the lowest common denominator simply doesn’t work. Just, don’t. 😉
I did look forward to receiving the very cute Moroccanoil Treatment 10 ml sample, the packaging of which I actually worked on. In fact, it was one of the reasons I resubscribed to Ipsy. 😀
But alas, when I took the Beauty Quiz a while back, I must have not selected hair products because, well, I already work for a haircare brand. I did get the Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Miracle Multiplying Volume Mist for hair last month though.
Anyhow, these were the noteworthy products from the Ipsy April 2016 Glam Bag:

Em by Michelle Phan Waterliner in Chocolate Dream
This appears to have been a bonus sample as it isn’t currently listed in the April lineup on the Ipsy website. YouTube superstar Michelle Phan is big on lining one’s waterline for maximum impact. She says on the Em Cosmetics site: “It’s a favorite trick of mine to complete any eye look! Dark shades define. Light shades brighten. It’s the perfect accessory for your eyes.”
Starlooks Luxe Longwear Eye Pencil in Jet
Sorry! I actually haven’t tried this one yet. But I do like that it’s a legit, full-size eyeliner, per my sentiments above about sampling.
Crown Brush C427 Duo Fiber Blush Brush
Now, who doesn’t love a good brush? I’ve recently revamped my brush collection; tossed some older ones from my beauty editor and makeup artist days; and purchased a whole new stash—including the Morphe 699 Gunmetal Set which I’ll talk about soooon. I’m simply happy to add this one to my (growing?!) collection. This blush brush isn’t super dense, but it’s soft enough and of good quality; it’ll work for your everyday “blushing” needs.
Tarte Cosmetics LipSurgence™ Lip Crème in Wonder
The shade is more of a muted pink rose than pictured, which appears more cherry. It has a pleasant minty finish, which tastes and feels nice.
Moroccanoil® Treatment Original
Now I hardly talk about work on the blog, I like to keep the two separate. But if there’s one thing I’d like to put out there, guys, it’s one word: Moroccanoil. It is a trademarked brand. The name was created by the co-founder, who happens to adore Morocco. So there is no such thing as “Moroccan Oil.” Yes, there is argan oil that comes from Morocco, and other places including Mexico. And Moroccanoil isn’t to be mistaken for copycats out there who have somehow finagled their way into creating something that sounds similar.
Okay, Moroccanoil speech over. 🙂 Oh, but yes, this product, Moroccanoil Treatment, is an awesome multitasker: It can be used as a “primer” for the hair, a leave-in conditioner, and a shine serum.
And now, without further ado, I’d like to bring your attention to Around The Blox—a new subscription service like no other!
Around The Blox will have subscribers receiving a monthly box containing four tickets or vouchers, including something to eat, drink, see, and do. “A sample box would include a restaurant meal, a drink at a bar, a show ticket, and an admission to a museum,” shared Betty Huang, co-founder of this exciting startup. “All of the activities we include are located within Manhattan, with few exceptions in close-by Brooklyn.”
The site is already open for sign-ups, and be sure you do sign up
as they will be choosing two lucky winners very soon. One will receive tickets for two to the Broadway show, Something Rotten, and another will receive a full year’s subscription to Around The Blox. [UPDATE: The contest is over but you can still get 20% your first box when you sign up.] AND, stay tuned, I will have a promo code soon for NY Minute Now readers! 🙂
